Yesterday, Charlie Kirk was taken from us in a brutal assassination. He was a husband, a father, a Christian, a man of conviction. As I reflect on his life and the legacy he leaves behind, I am reminded of how fragile life is, but also of how powerful one life can be when lived with purpose.
Charlie was more than a public figure. He was a man who believed in the power of truth, faith, and freedom. He gave so much of himself to inspire the next generation, to challenge young people to think critically about the world around them, and to encourage them to never be afraid of speaking up for what they believe in. His courage was not found in anger, but in conviction. His voice was not filled with hatred, but with passion. And his life was lived in service of something greater than himself.
To his wife and his children, and to all of his family and loved ones, I want to say that South Carolina stands with you. We mourn with you. We pray with you. And we will not forget the sacrifice that Charlie made in the pursuit of truth and liberty. Your grief is our grief, and we wrap you in our prayers during this dark and difficult time.
This was not only an attack on Charlie. It felt like an attack on the principles he stood for and the freedoms that make our nation great. It felt like an attack on the right of every American to gather peacefully, to speak openly, and to live without fear of violence for their beliefs. Violence has no place in our country, and hatred or disagreements must never be allowed to silence voices of conviction or become acceptable recourse in society.
Justice must be pursued with determination, transparency, and accountability. Those responsible for this evil act must be held fully accountable, and I will always stand on the side of law, order, and justice.
But beyond justice, we must also look inward as a nation. We must ask ourselves what it will take to build a society where our disagreements are debated with civility, where our differences are not met with violence, and where our children inherit a country that values life, liberty, and community above all else. That is how we honor Charlie’s life. That is how we make sure his work was not in vain.
Charlie often spoke of the power of the grassroots, the power of ordinary people rising up to make an extraordinary difference and the importance of faith. Today, it is up to us to carry that vision forward. We cannot let this tragedy silence us or divide us. Instead, we must be unified in our determination to live boldly, to speak freely, and to stand together as Americans.
Let us come together in prayer, in resolve, and in action. Let us honor Charlie Kirk’s legacy by living out the values he so fiercely defended, faith, courage, love of country, and the unwavering belief in the promise of America.
With a grieving heart, but with unshaken resolve,
Alan Wilson
Attorney General of South Carolina
