Two familiar stretches of road in Saluda County will now serve as lasting reminders of courage, sacrifice, and community service. Recently, new sections of Highways 378 and 391 were officially designated in honor of Saluda County firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty while responding to Hurricane Helene in 2024.
Two bills introduced by District 39 Representative, Cal Forrest, are responsible for this lasting tribute to two of Saluda County’s heroes. These were H.4444 and H.4445, introduced in 2025 and put into effect very recently.

Saluda will never forget.
On U.S. Highway 378, a one‑mile section extending west from the Saluda traffic circle now bears the name of Fire Chief Chad Satcher of the Circle Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Satcher was known across the county as a dedicated leader, a mentor to younger firefighters, and a steady presence in times of crisis. The new highway designation ensures that residents and travelers alike are reminded every day of his commitment to protecting Saluda County.
On South Carolina Highway 391, a section stretching from the Lexington–Saluda County line toward Batesburg‑Leesville has been named in honor of firefighter Landon “Cale” Bodie. A recent new volunteer member of the Circle Volunteer Fire Department, Bodie is remembered for his work ethic, his willingness to serve whenever called upon, and his deep love for his community. The designation along Highway 391 stands as a visible tribute to his service and sacrifice.
Both men lost their lives while responding to the earliest devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene, answering the call when their neighbors needed them most. Their deaths were felt not only by their families and fellow firefighters, but by the entire Saluda County community and first responders across South Carolina.
The new highway names are a way for the state and the county to say, in a permanent and public way, that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.
For local residents, these designations do more than change the signs along the road. They reflect the values that define Saluda County: courage, service, and a willingness to put others first. Each time someone passes the new markers on Highways 378 and 391, they will be reminded that real heroes live among us—and that two of them wore the uniform of the Saluda County fire service.
As Republicans, we believe in honoring first responders and supporting the men and women who stand between our communities and danger. Saluda County’s decision to name these stretches of highway for Chief Chad Satcher and Firefighter Landon “Cale” Bodie is a fitting tribute to their lives and a powerful reminder of the price some pay to keep the rest of us safe.
We are proud that it was our Republican Representative, Cal Forrest, who made sure these men were honored in this manner.
