Saluda County is small, rural, and proud of it. That also means our tax base is small. Every trip to the grocery store, every roll of fencing, every box of chicken feed matters a little more here than it does in one of the larger counties next door.
When you buy something in a store, sales tax is collected where you stand at the register. South Carolina’s statewide rate is 6%. Saluda County adds two local pennies on the dollar (local option plus capital projects), so most of us pay 8% in total. Those extra two pennies are the ones that stay close to home and help pay for the things we actually use: county roads, fire stations, recreation, and the rest of the county’s modest budget.
When you drive across the county line to shop, those two local pennies go with you. The state still gets its 6%, but the local share lands in the other county’s pot, not ours.
Can’t find it in Saluda? Ordering online also helps our home county. If the package is delivered to a home inside Saluda County, the local tax follows the house, not the post office. That includes folks who get their mail from Batesburg-Leesville (29006 and 29070) or Johnston (29832).
A question about this came up a couple of years ago and again recently. The SC Department of Revenue confirmed: if you live in Saluda County, the tax on that mail-order delivery will come back to Saluda. The state has a method of taking care of tax situations just like this.
So you can skip the extra drive, save a little gas, and still send your local pennies home.
The best idea, of course, is buying from Saluda County businesses whenever you can. Local beef, local poultry, hardware, feed, groceries—whatever we can reasonably get without leaving the county. The merchant stays in business, the tax stays in the county, and nobody has to wonder where those sales tax pennies go.
We don’t have a giant shopping mall or a deep well of extra revenue to draw from. We have each other and a relatively small pot of sales-tax money. Every time we keep a purchase in Saluda—or at least keep the delivery address in Saluda—we put another penny in that coffer.
Shop local when you can. Order when you need to. Just remember, when that online purchase is placed in your mailbox or your front porch, the taxes you paid stay in Saluda.
Those two extra pennies add up faster than you think.
