The SAVE America Act has passed the U.S. House and now faces an uphill but important fight in the Senate, where Democrats are expected to filibuster and some Republicans are still on the fence.
What the SAVE America Act does
- Requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, tightening the National Voter Registration Act so states must actually verify citizenship, not just ask a checkbox question.
- Requires photo voter ID for federal elections, building on the original SAVE Act to add a nationwide ID requirement that polls show is overwhelmingly popular with voters.
- Directs states to identify and remove non‑citizens from existing voter rolls, with access to federal databases to help verify status and ensure that only eligible citizens remain registered.
Outlook in the Senate
- The bill (H.R. 7296 / S.1383) is championed by Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Mike Lee and strongly backed by President Trump and national conservative groups.
- Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pledged to bring it up, but Democrats are unified in opposition and the votes to get to 60 for cloture are not there today, meaning the bill is likely to stall unless public pressure changes the political math.
How South Carolina Republicans can help
- Contact Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott: Graham is already a public cosponsor and ally; strong, vocal support from South Carolina can help him press leadership for a vote and encourage Scott to be equally visible.
- Flood the Senate with calls and letters: Use state GOP channels, county parties, and church and grassroots networks to urge friends and family in swing or hesitant GOP states to call their senators in support of the SAVE America Act.
- Educate locally and build the record: Host forums, pass county and state party resolutions1, and submit op‑eds explaining why proof of citizenship plus voter ID are common‑sense safeguards that protect legal voters of every race and party.
If South Carolina Republicans make this a sustained, grassroots priority—not just a one‑day news cycle issue—they can help raise the national pressure needed to move reluctant senators and keep election integrity at the center of the 2026 agenda.
Our Congresswoman, Sheri Biggs voted for the SAVE America Act in the House.
Our Senators, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are both supporting it in the Senate
- The Saluda County Republican Party will be drafting such a resolution. ↩︎
