A Chinese national living in Andover, Massachusetts, has been arrested and charged with federal voter fraud after allegedly hijacking another person’s identity to register and cast a ballot in the 2024 presidential election.
Yupeng Sun, 33, is accused of submitting a fraudulent online voter registration on October 10, 2024, through the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website. He impersonated another Chinese national who holds legal permanent resident status. Three weeks later, on October 31, Sun allegedly walked into Malden City Hall and cast an early ballot under that same stolen identity.
This is classic fraudulent registration paired with fraudulent voting—two federal felonies, each carrying up to five years in prison. The victim was a non-citizen permanent resident who never registered or voted. Only U.S. citizens may vote in federal elections. Yet a foreign national allegedly exploited weak verification to inject an illegal ballot into the presidential race.
Sun didn’t stop there. Prosecutors say he also filed fraudulent immigration forms claiming the victim and his wife wanted to abandon their green cards. When the couple returned from overseas, their permanent resident cards were seized and they were placed in removal proceedings—all because of the forged documents. Later, Sun allegedly sent anonymous tips to federal authorities accusing the innocent victim of the very illegal voting Sun himself had committed.
One stolen identity.
One fraudulent registration.
One illegal ballot.
Real damage inflicted on an innocent family. And a clear reminder that election integrity is not optional.
Foreign nationals committing voter fraud under stolen identities is not a “rare” problem or a right-wing talking point. It is a documented crime that federal prosecutors are now charging in Massachusetts.
Every illegal registration and every fraudulent ballot dilutes the vote of every American citizen.
