Dr. Annie Andrews is on record calling white women “the problem.”
In a video her Republican opponent is now using against her, the South Carolina Democrat says she talks about “the problem with white women” because she is one herself and because, “electorally, we are the problem.”
She points to 2016, when she says 47 percent of white women voted for Donald Trump instead of the white woman on the Democratic ticket.
Pressed on CNN’s Inside Politics, Dana Bash noted the obvious: South Carolina is almost 70 percent white and majority women, and asked whether that is a winning message. Andrews did not walk it back. She said the comments were a response to voters who elect people willing to limit abortion and “reproductive freedom.”
In a state Democrats have not won a Senate race in since 1998, Andrews’ own words make the case: she sees a large share of South Carolina women as the obstacle, not the voters she needs to persuade.
