Alan Wilson was born July 16, 1973, in West Columbia, and is a fifth-generation South Carolinian. He and his three brothers were quite young when their father was killed in a military training accident. Their mother later met, and married, Joe Wilson, a long-time congressman from South Carolina. Joe adopted Alan and all three of his brothers.
Alan graduated from Francis Marion University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He then served nearly three decades in the South Carolina Army National Guard, rising to Colonel in the JAG Corps with an Iraq deployment and Combat Action Badge.
When Wilson was elected Attorney General in 2010 he was the youngest in the nation at that time. He has been re-elected three times, and during his tenure he has lead crackdowns on human trafficking and violent crime, spearheading or joining a number of multi-state conservative legal challenges. During that time, Wilson also served as Chair of the Republican Attorneys General Association.
Wilson announced his 2026 campaign for Governor of South Carolina in June 2025, running as a proven prosecutor and battle-tested conservative.
